Landscape in Motion

The artwork Landscape in Motion* utilizes the space of the G. & A. Mamidakis Foundation as a platform to promote environmental awareness among all its visitors, focusing on our vulnerable natural environment and the urgent need to preserve its delicate balance.

Inspired by the swirling of a leaf in the air, it draws attention to the endangered and rare flora of Crete, encouraging collective awareness; focusing the viewers’ attention to their delicate beauty and the urgent need for their preservation. Drawing inspiration from the ‘Red Data Book of Rare and Threatened Plants of Greece’, the work is developed in five parts, and combines painterly and sculptural elements, depicting the plants of Crete that are at high risk of extinction in the wild and have been classified as Critically Endangered (CR)

From right to left, the first panel showcases Nepeta sphaciotica (Labiatae), known for its vibrant hues and delicate structure. The second panel features Callitriche pulchra (Callitrichaceae), with its intricate leaf patterns that captivate the eye. The third panel presents Anthemis glaberrima (Compositae), whose bright, daisy-like flowers evoke a sense of purity. The fourth panel uniquely highlights two species: Bupleurum kakiskalae (Umbelliferae) and Convolvulus argyrothamnos, each with their distinct forms and textures. The final panel features the striking, delicate blooms of Dianthus juniperinus kavusicus (Caryophyllaceae).

By highlighting the fragility and beauty of the island’s flora, this artwork reminds us that it is within our power to create a world where even the most delicate ecosystems can thrive.
